What are the industrial applications of polylactic acid (PLA)
Time:2020-11-23
1. Automotive industry
Japan's Toray Company combines PLA resin modification technology, fiber manufacturing technology and dyeing processing technology to develop car mats and spare tire cover with high-performance PLA fiber as the main component. The spare tire cover has been used on the fully improved small car "Raum" launched by Toyota Motor Corporation in 2003. Following the development of foot pads and spare tire cover, Toray has developed PLA products suitable for other automotive parts such as door, rim, seat, and ceiling materials.
2. The field of disposable products
The absolutely harmless nature of polylactic acid makes polylactic acid a unique advantage in the field of disposable products such as disposable tableware and food packaging materials. Its ability to be completely biodegradable also meets the high environmental protection requirements of all countries in the world, especially the European Union, the United States and Japan.
3. Electronic field
In order to save petroleum resources while reducing the global greenhouse effect, and to further expand the application fields of polylactic acid made from renewable biological resources, many Japanese companies have conducted in-depth research on the application of PLA in the field of electronics and electrical appliances and achieved excellent results.
Mobile phone parts and case materials
NTT DoCoMo and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. trial-produced a mobile phone using PLA in its case in April 2005. In May 2005, one button of the "premini-ⅡS" mobile phone sold by NTT DoCoMo used PLA resin. In 2006, Fujitsu, Fujitsu Research Institute and Toray jointly developed a PLA/PC alloy with impact resistance 1.5 times that of PLA and used it for parts such as mobile phone shells.
Compact disc
In September 2003, Sanyo Mavic Mcdia and Mitsui Chemicals jointly developed the "MildDisc" for music CDs, VCDs, and CD-ROM discs made with PLA as the base material. It said that it is difficult to produce 10 CD discs from one corn on the cob. The company has developed a high-speed and precise transfer of CD model technology. Through strict mold temperature adjustment and improvement of ionic agents, it has produced polylactic acid CD discs with slow curing speed. The use of biodegradable resin can solve the environmental pollution caused by the waste of existing CD discs. PLA consumes less energy when burning than PC burning, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions. If landfill is used, PLA can be rapidly biodegraded in 2-5 years, while PC remains semi-permanently in the soil.
